BROCKTON – Jass Stewart admits that his proposal is “awkward.”
He is asking the City Council to give itself a 50-percent pay raise – from $10,000 to $15,000 – and then tie councilors’ salaries to inflation.
“It’s always kind of an awkward thing to do,” Stewart, a councilor-at-large, said. ‘I think it’s well overdue.”
Stewart put forward the proposal because he believes councilors are underpaid for how much they do and how little institutional support they have. He also wonders when the council will increase its compensation if not now. It hasn’t been adjusted in 20 years.
Topic to be discussed at next Ordinance Meeting. If approved, won't go into effect until 2016. Article mentioned done CC may not run and some are on my the fence. Voting on a raise for oneself out of taxpayers money bothers me. And don't they get medical as well?

I don't have a problem if they want a raise, but tying it to inflation is not a good idea. Just look at the gas tax initiative. Sure way to piss off the electorate.
City Councilors get insurance, same as any city employee, but they pay a portion just the same.
One of the best city councilors (Charlie Logan) posted his pay stub to prove that they do pay toward their health insurance, so I know this to be a fact.

You definatley don't do the job for the money, we are always hit up for tons of different fundraisers and donations and unless you run your own fundraiser each year it's mostly out of your own pocket. Maybe you could get more people interested in running if the pay was more inline with other comparable cities, who knows. At this time it would be tough to make a change to the pay scale where we still have City employees who need contracts negotiated and are being told there is no money.
Maybe in the future but it would be tough now.

1- everyone should get a cost of living increase but it should be in line with other city employees 2% maybe 3%
2- 20 years is a long time to go without a raise, however, none of these counselors have been here for 20 years
3- When they were elected/reelected they all knew what the pay scale was, most do not do this job for the pay

NEW BEDFORD — The City Council's 44 percent salary hike to $21,000 — about $500 more than the city's average per capita income — wouldn't fly in similar cities, councilors in those communities said, pointing to tight budgets and a tough economy.
"Wow," said Dan Cahill, an at-large councilor in Lynn, where the annual councilor salary is $15,301.71, a number tied to the mayor's pay.
"That's pretty aggressive," said Thomas Monahan, Ward 2 Councilor in Brockton, where he said the $10,000 pay, set by ordinance, has been the same since 1995. "You're never going to make everybody happy but, in these times right now, it's tough to be giving the elected officials any raises."

I think the council does a lot of work for what they get paid, and I wouldn't be opposed to giving them a pay bump.
Not tied to inflation though, ever.

Can the Mayor veto if they approve themselves a raise?

Question: how many of you have waited 20 years to get a raise?
Question: if you did wait 20 years, would 3% be acceptable?"

I read that and all of a sudden I was really pissed off. This broads whacked. For one, she just got elected a year ago, hasn't been there 20 years and if she thinks having a dog park is more important, then she needs a slap. She just went on my list.

...well, she either thinks people are just profoundly stupid and doesn't realize just how much of an insult to people's intelligence these absolutely idiotic questions are....or she's very smart in posting them on the brockton hub knowing she might reel in some praise from the dim-wits that hang out there all day
