you know, you can take the finest surveys ... still not going to fix brockton, especially when everyone knows precisely what the problem is, but continue to deny it
cue the next round of violent crime...

This is why every downtown plan is a failure before it starts. Everything is designed and built with cars in mind. Cars that have killed downtown's everywhere. So let's rebuild a working downtown around our cars. This is how failures are made.

from there, we can bring back Kresge's, Almy's, Fulginetti Furs, Romm's jewelry and Dunningtons
...and someone seriously needs to consider putting back up those arched Christmas decorations that span the width of main street!

Not only is the developer looking to do a (1) setback above existing building (2) build up possibly 4 additional levels (3) provide below grade parking.... I was blown away at this possibility. That someone in Brockton would do all three of those things, and I believe fix the original façade back to something akin to it's original. Wins across the board if they all happen, and what should be happening more and more often. Building up without surface parking lots.
Lots of other stuff I agreed with and didn't. I meant to do a recap of the tour and the meeting afterwards with the design team and other residents. I'll try to remember and recap.

About time too. Too bad it took 40 years or so to realize malls are terrible. They kill not just downtown areas, but any retail outlets close to where people actually live. They are the ultimate sin created by the post WWII generation of Americans that fell in love with their cars, and forgot how nice it can be to walk around the corner to get most of your day to day needs in local stores. The only slightly worse offshoot of this urban sprawl pandemic we have and are still going thru would be the Mall's stunted little half brother, the Strip Mall. Not only do you need a car to get to them, they have nothing you want when you get there. So you need to drive to 3 more.Dennis M wrote: They haven't built an enclosed mall in the United States since 2006, so it's no shock that the mall is dying out. Here, where there is plenty of up and coming new construction, all retail establishments are multi-use outdoor facilities.
Malls serve one purpose decently well, and that is shopping at the holiday season. That is becoming less of a strength with Amazon and other online retailers being so reliable and cost competitive these days.
I've given my thoughts on our mall a number of times, and still can't wait for the day it's gone and replaced with a much smarter, albeit retail heavy, neighborhood. With business and residential components mixed in. Location wise it was the only other spot in the city I saw as a viable location for a resort casino, and would still like to see it turned into a much more dense, much more vertical version of Legacy Place. More of a drivers destination, but with multiple levels of residential on top so it can function on it's own as a neighborhood.

WHAT?!....are you kidding me?!....forward thinking like that will get you in trouble with not only the NIMBY's, but the michelle dubois' and the jacob taggers who think that brockton is supposed to be a cute little hamlet south of boston where you can live on section 8 and suck on the non-profit teat, and your child can get that 'brockton education' where, ironically, solar fields and contemporary power plants are frowned upon!
