provided....
we learn to accept that a certain ship has sailed, a particular window has closed, and a proverbial horse is out of the barn... only then will people realize the direction brockton is headed, and either embrace it or reject it.... i hasten to think the former is the way to go, and let the chips fall where they may

A very brief look at the registry of deeds would lead one to think that Dad Billy is careless with the money bestowed his corporations.
The property was purchased for $108,000 held for about five years and let run down to a point where a major rebuild was needed.
Billy Boy to the rescue by purchasing it, as is, for $280,000.

And we wonder why our taxes go up. All of these non profits don't pay any is why.
Our city is giving away loads of property to nonprofits and not just Main Spring or Father Bills.

i often think about why people no longer care about quality and aesthetics, and the pride that is supposed to be self-evident in a craft such as building a home

If you're a developer, you build to maximize profit. End of story.
Unless better looking building or better quality material costs can be recouped by selling homes for more, they don't get included.
I agree with your sentiment, because personally I don't want to put my name on an ugly product, no mater how well it sells. If you build ugly, and it sells, why change.
The City has no idea how to dictate design, so I wouldn't look to them for any relief.

The casual observer can go to the basement of a house like yours and see that even the wood "looks" different, more durable. You look at the construction and you can see it was built to last.
You can't fix stupid.
