Why do we have so few School Department Administrators who live in the city? I know there is no requirement to live here and there should not be. However, I must admit I am curious as to why so few choose to live here? Is it because they do no t like our city? ( they seem to like the pay check!!!). Is it because they do not want to pay less for a quality house and would rather overpay to live elsewhere( this might explain our poor math scores!). Is it because they secretly prefer "white " suburbia? What is the truth?

When you can tell us which came first, the chicken or the egg,

it speaks volumes! Would we accept "outsiders" running the City Council or Mayoral office?

My personal feelings......every and all city held positions
should be held by nothing but city residents. Common
sense tells you why. Shouldn't even be questioned.
They don't walk in our shoes.

this is precisely why i have always been in strong agreement with residency requirements .... and over the years since they've been lifted, we are now seeing the subliminal results

Residency requirements apply to the majority of city positions. Anyone know why it is different for the full school department? It was sort of enforced for one of former Superintendents.

Teachers are exempt from all residency requirements by state law. Superintendents are non-Union and it is City Charter that requires city employees to live in the City. Police/Fire can move out after establishing residency I believe after 7 years?

What has always blown my mind is that we allow teachers who don't live in Brockton to send their children here to be educated. So you don't live in the City By choice but you have no problems educating your kids here? Double Standard IMO.

What do you think they hate? the kids or the city or both? I've had my suspicions that there is bias based on some of the assumptions some of the middle school staff made about my kid before they really knew anything about her.

I live in Brockton now.

I think teachers who went through BPS system and came back to teach have a better understanding of the system, the kids and the cultural issues. We are however losing these young teachers due to the consistent layoffs and insecurity of jobs in this district. New teachers are let go and new teacher graduates don't want to come here. And to be honest young teachers very rarely buy in Brockton for many reasons but mostly crime.

I've encouraged both of my kids to buy outside of the city. And it's not just teachers. Fire/police move out as well. Brockton is no longer a place to raise young families. And the schools are no longer a huge draw. There are just as many, and in most cases, better educational opportunities outside of Brockton.

You're right and the same for teachers. After 2 layoffs my daughter found out first hand. There's stability, equal if not better pay and better support in other districts. That's for both urban and suburban districts.

I say the administration hates us because they can choose to live most anywhere in the area due to salaries but choose to not live h ere! Is it because we have minorities? Is it crime? What is it? Or do they think they are better than us? The sad thing is their policies and abusive spending has led to the layoffs and the movement away from the city by many solid families. They seem to have created a dynamic where the better families see that there are options out t here and unless you want to be in a system of low achievement without proper class materials you won't choose Brockton! However, if have a system with a lot of well paid( overpaid!!) people doing minimal then this is the place for you!! Why DO WE allow it?? Why does the school committee always hire a candidate who is part of the "club"?

No different than hiring unqualified people for city positions just because they're related.

I just watched the phony Maria Serpa Andrade talk about how great her Angelo School is with all its unique programs. Interesting footnote to this fraud who no one asks any questions to.......how come her children do not attend the Angelo???? Answer..............the check is nice from the taxpayers from Brockton but she lives in Milton!!! Another carpetbagger taking our money to enjoy her suburban life!! Hey, Ms. Serpa-Andrade? What is it that you do not like about us????
