Casino
“It’s a very stark contrast,” Michaud said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a community to get this kind of infrastructure package.”
The developer is proposing to spend $8.5 million on traffic and pedestrian improvements in the area of the fairgrounds if it receives a state casino license. The improvements largely draw from existing studies, and are aimed at creating efficient and safe ways to travel to the casino, primarily from Route 24.

When the whole idea of Casinos was going through the state house, and approvals and votes were being taken I never heard Brockton being mentioned. never.
There were a couple of places that seemed to be on the short list and fast tracked, but Brockton wasn't even whispered.
Why now? and do we really have a snowball's chance?

I would love to see that building refurbished.
While Mr. Carney was forbidden from tearing it down. He was not compelled to ensure it didn't deteriorate either. The elements have been cruel to that building.

I still feel Carney approached them, because he was going to get rid of the land anyhow and would benefit much more with them.
If Brockton loses out on this deal, there won't be another to take it's place. As it is, people are moving out because of the crime and unaffordable taxes. People usually look at the tax rate before purchasing a house First thing out of their mouth is, "You gotta be kidding". Do you think Broclton has anything to offer people to draw them here?

NEW BEDFORD — Developers behind New Bedford’s casino proposal announced this afternoon that they've secured financial backing for the $650 million casino and hotel project proposed for a waterfront site, clearing the final hurdle before a June 23 citywide casino vote and likely triggering a spring campaign season in coming weeks.
Andrew M. Paven, spokesman for New York-based developer KG Urban Enterprises, announced in an email that KG Urban would meet today's deadline set by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
“KG today submitted documents to the commission confirming that we have secured a financing package for the project that combines funding from a development partner, and equity financing from KG’s own principals. In addition, Scott Butera, former CEO of Foxwoods, will be joining KG as a partner," Paven said. "We will be working closely with the commission to finalize the administrative details of KG’s RFA1 application."
KG Urban also announced the addition of a deep-pocketed new partner, Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc. (GLPI), a real estate investment trust with holdings including Hollywood Casino properties in Louisiana and Maryland. Steven T. Snyder, senior vice president of corporate development for Gaming and Leisure, told the commission in a May 1 letter that the trust has "an enterprise value in excess of $6 billion" and would "fund the real property portion" of KG Urban's New Bedford casino project, pending a mutually acceptable lease.

Whoever winds up with the license will compete with the gambling market in Rhode Island, which includes a casino with table games in Lincoln, and a slots parlor in Newport. The Newport establishment wants to move to Tiverton, where it would expand to include full table games, like blackjack. If it did, it would be even closer to the Massachusetts border—and within a half hour of either New Bedford or Somerset.

During their investigation, officials had trouble collecting information from the Brockton Agricultural Society, which plans to sell its land off Belmont Street property if the developer receives the casino license. For example, investigators sought 20 years of the society’s meeting minutes and shareholder notices. They were only provided some of what they requested, prompting them to attach four conditions to their recommended approval.
The state must be provided, for instance, with information about transactions between the society and the Carneys regarding the fairgrounds property. Officials also mandated that the society’s books "be maintained according to generally accepted accounting principles."
