57 teachers were laid off permanently today. They don't teach 2 classes, most teach 3. They go in at 7. Most are there until after 4. The teacher in my house works at least one weekend day, lesson planning. She grades 1 night. And she takes calls many nights. She chose the profession. She has received RIF's 3/5 years. She has two degrees and a Masters. I am trying my best to convince her to go to a more stable district. She doesnt want to . She feels part of the of the fabric of the community and the Brockton School District. Are there those who ride the system? Most definitely. Just like all professions. But you shouldn't paint all teachers with such a broad brush.
And your argument that because they are in public job, they have job security (which is not always correct) do you hold that to Cops/Police? And keep in mind, teachers don't receive OT.
I understand you have such a disdain for teachers but at least present the other side of the argument.

Dad....I have no disdain for teachers but teaching 3 classes a day is not back breaking work. When one factors in the job pays $86,000( according to the Department of Ed's site) for 3 classes and only 180 days a year it is the part time job one can get. Teachers are , however, only part of the problem in the city. The administration is grossly overpaid as are the police and fire.
As for the ethic of your child working I appreciate that and the taxpayers do. However, I am just not convinced $100,000 teachers are the way to go in a city that cannot maintain its infrastructure!
